Tankless units announce their faults with an error code, which makes them far more diagnosable than a tank. The trap is that the same code can point at a failed component or at a gas line that was never sized correctly, and only one of those is fixed by buying a part.

How our pricing works
Six things that are true on every job, in every town we cover.
Sales tax is already in the number.All-inclusive pricing with no hidden fees, so the figure we quote you is the figure on the invoice.
No service call fee and no diagnostic fee.Phone troubleshooting is free, and you get an accurate price on that call before anyone is dispatched.
What we quote is what you pay.The number does not move once you have agreed to it, unless you approve a change in scope first.
We will beat any written quote. On comparable equipment and the same scope. If someone has already put a figure in writing, bring it to us.
Nobody here works on commission. Our technicians are paid to install and repair, so no one earns more by talking you into a bigger job.
$100 off a water heater replacement.Mention this site when you call and it comes off the price.
The ranges above are typical for the Charlotte market, published so you have something to measure any quote against, including ours. They are not quotes, and they are confirmed before any work begins. The figure that matters is the one we give you in writing after diagnosing your specific unit.
Why homeowners call us for tankless water heater repair
Every one of these is something any Charlotte plumber could offer, and almost none of them do. That is the whole reason they are worth listing.
We are based in CharlotteWe are based here, so a Charlotte address is the shortest drive we make. Every neighbourhood in the city is a short drive rather than an edge-of-radius favour, which is why the arrival window here is two hours rather than a whole day.
We know what Charlotte water does to a tankYour supply comes from Charlotte Water, soft at around 32 ppm. That is the chemistry that has been working on the inside of your tank for its whole life, and it decides whether the anode rod or the annual flush is the job that matters.
We know which office issues your permitMecklenburg County through TIP. Getting that wrong is what turns a one-day job into three weeks.
Every price is published before you callReal ranges on every page, so you have something to measure any quote against, including ours. Almost nobody in this market publishes a number at all.
Nobody is paid on what they sellOur technicians are paid to install and repair. No one earns more by finding a bigger problem, which is the conflict at the centre of most water heater complaints in this region.
Water heaters are all we doNot general plumbing with water heaters attached. That is why the common failure parts travel with us and why most jobs finish in one visit rather than becoming a second appointment.

Call or send the details
What the unit is doing, roughly how old it is and where it sits. Troubleshooting on that call is free, and sometimes it ends with us telling you that you do not need us at all.
02
A price before anyone drives to Charlotte
An accurate range for the job your symptom points at, sales tax already in it. You decide whether it is worth booking before a van leaves.

A two-hour arrival window
Not a full day of waiting in. We are based here, so a Charlotte address is the shortest drive we make. We answer at night and at weekends when it genuinely will not wait.
04
We diagnose before we recommend
Nobody here is paid commission, so no one earns more by finding a bigger problem. The rule we use to choose between repair and replacement is published with an age and a dollar figure attached.
05
Permit handled where the job needs one
In Charlotte that goes through Mecklenburg County through TIP. Where the work genuinely does not need a permit we tell you that instead of adding a fee for one nobody filed.
Tankless Water Heater Repair in Charlotte, NC
The single most useful thing about a tankless water heater is that it tells you what is wrong. The single most common way the repair goes wrong is treating the code as a parts list. An ignition fault code, for instance, is thrown by a failed igniter, a dirty flame rod, an undersized gas line, a blocked vent and a partially closed gas valve alike. Tell us the code and the brand when you call and we can usually narrow it before we dispatch.
Read the code, then check the supply
Every tankless unit displays an alphanumeric fault code on the unit or in the manufacturer's app. Codes differ by brand and model year, and third-party tables on the internet contradict each other, so we read yours against the correct handbook rather than a universal chart.
Broadly, the families are:
Ignition and flame failure. The most common family and the one most often misdiagnosed. Check gas supply pressure under load before replacing anything.
Air supply and exhaust. Blocked or badly terminated venting, or a blocked intake. Weather-dependent and intermittent faults usually live here.
Overheat and exchanger. Often scale-related, sometimes a genuine exchanger fault.
Flow and sensor. Flow sensor fouled or failed, thermistors drifting.
Electrical and board. The rarest, and the last thing we condemn rather than the first.
What the job covers in Charlotte
System focus
Gas and electric tankless units: ignition and flame sensing, gas supply and venting faults, flow sensors, mixing and temperature stability, control boards and heat exchangers.
Target outcome
The fault traced to a specific cause, including the supply-side causes that get misdiagnosed as component failures.
Decision point
Ignition faults on a unit that was recently installed are a supply problem until proven otherwise. A cracked heat exchanger is a warranty path rather than a repair line item.
The ignition fault that is really a gas line
This is the fault we are called out to most, and it is worth understanding because it changes what the fix is.
The demand quadrupled. A tankless at full fire draws 150,000 to 199,000 BTU against about 40,000 for the tank it replaced.
An un-upsized line starves it. The unit ignites fine at low fire, then starves as it ramps, throwing a flame failure or a combustion code.
Which is why it is worse in winter. The temperature rise is greatest and the burner works hardest, so the fault reads as intermittent.
No part fixes that. We measure gas pressure at the unit, static and under full load, which is the reading that settles it. If the line is undersized the installation was incomplete, and we will say so even when we did not do it.
Cold water sandwich, and what it is not
A burst of hot, then cold, then hot again a few seconds later is the classic tankless complaint, and it is usually not a fault at all. It is the gap between the hot water already in the pipe, the cold slug behind it, and the unit firing and coming up to temperature.
What genuinely reduces it. A correctly sized unit so it is not cycling, a small buffer tank on units that support one, and a recirculation strategy that suits the unit.
What does not. Replacing the water heater, which is occasionally what gets sold.
The related complaint. A unit that will not fire at very low flow, typically a bathroom tap barely open. Every tankless has a minimum activation flow rate, so a trickle that never goes hot is the specification rather than a defect.
When the fault is scale, in a soft-water city
Overheat codes and a drop in flow both point at scale in the heat exchanger. In Charlotte that happens more slowly than the manufacturer's default schedule assumes, because the water is soft at 32 ppm, but it still happens over years.
Service valves decide the size of the job. With isolation valves fitted, descaling is a straightforward hour. Without them it is a much bigger job, and worth fixing permanently at the same visit. See tankless maintenance.
Recirculation accelerates it. Timer-driven recirculation on a unit not designed for it cycles the exchanger constantly to reheat water nobody is using, which is a genuine wear mechanism.
It is a new-build belt pattern. Common through Waxhaw, Weddington and Marvin, where tankless and recirculation were sold together.
Demand control usually resolves it. Moving off a timer fixes the wear without replacing hardware.
When we will tell you not to repair it
A cracked or corroded primary heat exchanger is not economically repairable in a residential unit. It is also the part most likely to still be under warranty, because exchanger warranties commonly run twelve to fifteen years while parts warranties run five.
We identify it, document it, run the serial and help you file the claim. What we will not do is bill you diagnostic-by-diagnostic toward a conclusion we can already see, which is the most expensive way this particular job goes wrong. If it is out of warranty, our replacement page covers the options honestly, including converting back to a tank.

Tankless Water Heater Repair in Charlotte, answered
With the local water chemistry, pressure and code rules that actually apply here.
What does the error code on my tankless water heater mean?
+
It depends on the brand and model year, and published universal tables contradict each other. Tell us the exact code and the brand off the data plate and we will read it against the correct handbook. Broadly the families are ignition and flame failure, air supply and exhaust, overheat and exchanger, flow and sensor, and control board.
Why does my tankless water heater keep shutting off?
+
The most common cause in Charlotte is a gas line that was never upsized at installation. The unit ignites at low fire and starves as it ramps, throwing a flame failure. It is typically worse in winter when the temperature rise is greatest. No replacement part fixes it; the line has to be measured under full load.
Why do I get hot then cold then hot again?
+
That is the cold water sandwich, and it is usually the appliance behaving normally rather than a fault. It is the gap between the hot water already in the pipe, the cold slug behind it, and the unit coming up to temperature. A correctly sized unit, a small buffer tank where supported, or a suitable recirculation setup all reduce it.
Is my tankless water heater worth repairing?
+
Usually yes. Tankless units run fifteen to twenty years and most faults are single components. The one case where the answer changes is a cracked primary heat exchanger, which is not economically repairable, though it is also the part most likely to still be under a twelve to fifteen year warranty.
Do you work on all tankless brands?
+
Yes, and we read the fault code against the manufacturer handbook for your specific model rather than a generic table. Tell us the brand and model off the data plate when you call and we will often arrive with the right part on the truck.
