Gas, venting and the permit in Kannapolis
A tankless conversion is a permit job without exception, because it changes the fuel routing, the venting, or both. In Kannapolis that goes through the City of Kannapolis and Cabarrus County, which the county line complicates, and we pull it rather than working around it.
Three things decide whether the install is straightforward or not:
- Gas line capacity. The single most common reason a tankless quote comes in higher than expected. We size the line to the real load rather than assuming the existing one will do.
- Venting. Condensing units need their own sealed venting and a condensate route. Where the old tank vented into a shared flue, that flue may now be oversized for whatever is left on it.
- Where it goes. The mill village housing is crawlspace-dominant with genuinely restricted clearances, and we quote that access before the visit. The post-2000 subdivisions are straightforward garage and closet installs.

What Kannapolis itself changes
The housing in Kannapolis
Kannapolis is a genuine mill-village barbell with real income behind it. 29.7% of the housing predates 1960, concentrated in the former Cannon Mills village, while 40.7% was built in 2000 or later in the newer subdivisions. Two very different jobs in one town: old tanks in old houses with tight access, and second-cycle replacements in modern garages.
The pipe era
Galvanised is a realistic possibility in the pre-1960 mill village stock and it restricts hot and cold together as it corrodes inward. The 1980s and 1990s portion carries polybutylene. Post-2000 is copper and PEX.
