Before you replace it in Lincolnton
Our published rule applies here exactly as it does in Charlotte, and it is the same rule whoever answers the phone:
- Under 8 years old: we repair it. Elements, thermostats, gas valves and dip tubes are serviceable parts on a tank with years left in it.
- 8 to 12 years old: we repair it if the fix lands under about $500. You are risking $250 to defer $2,000.
- Leaking from the tank body, at any age: replace it. A perforated tank cannot be patched.
What decides which of those you are in is partly the water. Yours comes from the City of Lincolnton, and that is the supply whose chemistry has been working on the inside of your tank for its whole life. Where the water is soft and lightly buffered it corrodes rather than scales, which means tanks end by anode depletion and perforation rather than a slow decline. A leak from the shell is a genuine end-of-life signal here rather than something to nurse along.
One thing to check before you shop on price: electricity here comes from the City of Lincolnton, not Duke Energy. Any heat pump water heater rebate quoted to you against a Duke tariff at a Lincolnton address is being quoted against the wrong utility.

What Lincolnton itself changes
The housing in Lincolnton
Lincolnton is the Lincoln County seat and an old one, with the housing mix that implies: a genuinely old core, a mid-century ring around it, and newer building further out. Most of the tanks we are called to here are not first replacements. They are the second or third, and the useful question is usually not what failed but whether the last person to work on it checked the anode or just swapped the part in front of them.
The pipe era
Old enough that galvanised supply is genuinely possible in the core. If both hot and cold are weak, it is the supply and not the heater, and a new tank will not change it.
