Descaling on China Grove water
Manufacturers write one descaling interval for the whole country, and it is set for hard water. Yours comes from Salisbury-Rowan Utilities, and where that supply is soft the exchanger fouls considerably more slowly than that schedule assumes.
We will tell you honestly where you sit on that, because the alternative is descaling a unit annually that does not need it. Two caveats worth knowing before you skip it entirely: some manufacturers require documented annual servicing to keep the heat exchanger warranty valid, which is worth more than the service costs, and a property on a private well is a completely different conversation from one on the municipal supply.
- Descale on an interval that matches your actual water rather than the manual's default.
- Inlet filter clean, which is the most commonly skipped job and the cheapest.
- Flow rate and combustion check, so a declining unit is caught before it fails in January.

What China Grove itself changes
The housing in China Grove
China Grove grew around milling and the town still shows it, right down to the 1903 roller mill in the middle of it. The housing that came with that era is small, close together and still occupied, and the utility spaces in it were sized for the equipment of the time rather than for a modern fifty gallon tank. Newer building sits around the edges. The question we get asked most here is not what it costs to fix but whether a bigger tank will physically go in, and quite often the honest answer is no.
Where the heaters sit
Utility room, closet and crawlspace through the older streets, garage in the newer building. In the mill-era houses the doorway is frequently the binding constraint, not the floor space, and it is worth measuring before anyone quotes you an upgrade.
